Gobowen Library – Consultation On Opening Times

On Tuesday 24th May a 6 week public consultation was launched on proposed reductions to library opening hours.

The consultation is in response to the £1.1m savings, library services have to make as part of Shropshire Council’s £61m savings plan identified in its Financial Strategy 2016-2019.  Previous savings have already been made through a range of efficiency savings and improved operating arrangements. The transfer of libraries and customer services to community management arrangements is delivering further cost reductions.

The proposals to changes to library opening hours potentially affect all libraries excepting those that have already transferred to alternative community management arrangements.

The new times suggested in the proposals have been based on an analysis of visitor numbers to each of the libraries which was undertaken to identify the quietest periods, which according to the research, has been identified as evenings and Saturday afternoons.  The proposals also reflect changing patterns of library use due to digital and online developments, which are making it make it easier for people to access library services remotely.

The proposed changes to library opening hours will bring savings of around £55k.

The consultation will be live on the ‘Get Involved’ section on the Shropshire Council website under ‘Review of Library Opening Hours’ Alternatively, consultation documents will be available at local libraries

Deadline for submissions is 5 July 2016.
